Competition Rules
Please note that there are 2 categories that can be entered:
- Yield from 3 Rocket seed potatoes
- Yield from 3 seed potatoes of any other variety
In order to enter for the competition the following rules must be followed:
- Only primary schools in England, Scotland and Wales are eligible to take part.
- In order to take part in the competition schools must have registered by 3rd February 2006 either via the website or over the phone. Registration and participation in the competition is free.
- The school must follow the rules regarding the Potato Growing Kit as set out below. Any school found not to have done so will be disqualified.
- The school may grow as many potato plants as it wishes; however the school may only submit its heaviest crop in each category. The competition can only accept one entry in each category per school.
- The challenge begins on 20th February 2006; schools must not start growing their potato (including chitting) before this date. Their buckets must be turned out and the crop from the three plants harvested no later than 23rd June 2006.
- Schools must accurately weigh their crop to the nearest gram. The crop must be washed and dried before weighing, ensuring all soil / compost is removed.
- Schools must submit their weight of potatoes and a photo of the potato plant growing by 7th July 2006 to the Potato Council either by post or by email using the competition entry form that will be provided. Any entries posted are entirely at the schools own risk.
- Only one first prize can be awarded for each category. If there is a tie for first place the winner will be randomly selected by judges appointed by the Potato Council. The first prize will be a digital camera of specification chosen by the Potato Council. For the Rocket category the school that grows the heaviest weight in the following regions, Scotland, Wales, North England, Central England and South England, will be awarded a prize. The overall winner will receive the digital camera and the winners in the 4 other regions will receive cookery equipment and recipes worth £50. Winners will be notified either in writing or by phone within 28 days after the closing date, 7th July 2006.
- Winning entrants agree to take part in Potato Council publicity. Winners details will be posted on the educational website, www.potatoesforschools.org.uk within one month of the competition closing date.
Potato Growing Kit Rules
- Potatoes must be grown in a receptacle with a maximum diameter of 50cm or less.
- The potato seed variety used for the main competition must be Rocket. 3 Rocket tubers must be planted in each bucket or other container.
- In order to enter the second category schools may grow any other potato variety. 3 tubers of the same variety must be planted in each bucket or other container.
- Soil or compost may be used, there are no restrictions on adding extra nutrients to the soil.
- An official competition entry form will be provided
- The Potato Council?s decision shall be final. It also reserves the right to disqualify any affiliate or nominee whose conduct is contrary to the rules or the intention of the competition, and it will declare as void any or all claims based on such conduct. The Potato Council has the right to add to or to waive any rules on reasonable notice; or to cancel the competition at any stage in the event of circumstances beyond the Potato Council?s reasonable control. No correspondence will be entered into.
