Taking Part
The BPC’s Grow Your Potatoes Challenge is back for its second year. This time schools can grow more than one variety to add to the excitement and to help children learn that there are different varieties. The main variety will be Rocket and one lot of Rocket seed will be supplied to each school that registers. Schools are then able to choose the second (or more) variety that they want to grow.
The school may want to see if a local potato grower is willing to supply them with seed (you must check that the seed is untreated so that it is safe to handle) for the second variety or perhaps buy some from a local garden centre. Some varieties you could use are Premiere, Swift, Estima, Marfona, Maris Bard or Desiree.
Even more resources
The BPC is producing more resources to support the challenge so it can be more closely linked into the formal school curriculum. These will include a new game, more worksheets and teacher's notes showing how to fit the challenge into different areas of the curriculum. FIND OUT MORE
More chances to win
There are 2 top prizes of a digital camera; one for the heaviest crop of Rocket potatoes and the other for the heaviest crop of any other variety. There will also be a smaller prize of cooking equipment given for the heaviest crop in an area (Scotland, Wales, North England, Central England and South England).
Taking part involves just 5 simple steps.
