Teachers Notes

Grow you own potato! Sounds simple ? and it is.

It?s a safe, cheap and really engaging way to support primary  teaching, especially if you use the materials the Potato Council has developed to lead a lesson or a group of lesson over the growing life of your potato. This year even more curriculum link resources are being developed to support the competition.

94% of schools that took part last year want to take part again. There was lots of positive feedback from schools that took part, comments included:

‘When we had finished emptying all the buckets, we cooked up all the potatoes and every child and teacher tasted one — Mmm delicious! We had great fun growing the potatoes and digging them up and the afternoon fitted in well at School as the whole week had been devoted to ‘Healthy Schools Week’.

I don’t know how we did compared with other schools, but it was certainly good fun and gave the children a chance to experience growing their own food.’

All schools taking part will receive a certificate and there is a great prize on offer for the winning schools of a digital camera.. Four schools will receive £50 worth of cookery equipment and recipes..

Visit 'Taking Part' for an idea of available resources and activities at each stage of the competition.
