Rules

In order to take part in the competition schools must adhere to the rules. Any school found not to have done so will be disqualified.

1

Only primary schools and home educators of primary aged children in England, Scotland and Wales are eligible to take part.

2

The Rocket and Vales Emerald seed potatoes provided MUST be used.

3

The seed potatoes should be grown in the black Hado grow bags provided – all three Rocket seed potatoes in one bag and all three Vales Emerald seed potatoes in the other – identified easily by using the variety labels supplied in your kit.

4

Soil or compost can be used as the growth medium: there are no restrictions on adding extra nutrients to the soil.

5

Schools must accurately weigh their crops separately to the nearest gramme. The weight must be submitted in grammes e.g. 1736g. The crop must be washed and dried, ensuring all soil/compost is removed.

The challenge begins on Tuesday 2nd March 2010; schools must not start growing their potatoes (including chitting) before this date. Grow bags must be harvested no later than Tuesday 22nd June 2010.

6

Schools must submit their weight of potatoes per variety by Thursday 1st July 2010 to the Potato Council using the competition entry form below.

7

The winner will be the school that grows the heaviest crop of potatoes in accordance with the rules. Mixed entries (Rocket and Vales Emerald) will not qualify.

8

There will be one first prize: An amazing allotment makeover for the school that grows the heaviest crop (regardless of variety) including the design and build, plants to get you started and maintenance for the year. A range of runners up prizes including a heavy duty Rainbow picnic bench, Rainbow Reston benches and two raised beds for the prize draw winners.

9

Winners will be notified either in writing or by phone within 28 days after the closing date of Thursday 1st July 2010.

10

Winning entrants agree to take part in Potato Council publicity. Winner’s details will be posted on the educational website www.potatoesforschools.org.uk within one month of the competition closing date.
