Congratulations to all the 10,000 schools that took part in our nationwide potato growing activity - Grow Your Own Potatoes. We have had some wonderful feedback which is always gratefully received and in 2009 we hope to develop the website so that you can all share this feedback with us.

After successfully harvesting their potato plants grown from seed, thousands of schools around the country have been submitting the final weight of their crops, as the Potato Council's 'Grow Your Own Potatoes' (GYOP) project reaches its conclusion for this year.

Of the 10,000 schools that signed up and took part in the unique project to help primary aged children learn about potatoes and healthy eating, three have been rewarded for growing the heaviest crops of Vales Emerald and Rocket potatoes.

Pollyplatt Community Primary School in Lincolnshire harvested 4,700g of Rocket (provided to schools by Cygnet PB)
St Paulinus C of E Primary School in Crayford and Sutton First School in Norwich each harvested 4,000g of Vales Emerald (provided by Greenvale AP).
Each school receives a digital camera to celebrate their success.

Regionally the winners were:

Rocket
Wales – Milford Haven Junior School with 3417g
Central – Polyplatt Community Primary School, Lincoln with 4700g
North – Holy Family RC Primary School, Darlington with 3950g
Scotland – Shelibost Primary School with 2600g
South – St Agatha's Catholic Primary School, Surrey with 3305g

Congratulations to all the schools that took part in this year's competition. I hope you had as much fun growing potatoes as I did. We had a wonderful quote from a teacher in Serlby Park which I thought I would share with you as it seems to sum up what so many of you have said about the activity:

"The look on the children's faces – one of the greatest moments of my teaching career. All children should experience this!"

I am now delighted to be able to announce the winning schools in each of the following regions, Scotland, Wales, North England, Central England and South England, as well as the winner for the second seed variety.
