This year our gardening club have been very busy growing potatoes. We carefully followed the instructions from the Potato Council and to be environmentally friendly even used our school re-cycling bags to grow them in. We were delighted to yield a really healthy crop and have submitted our entry to the council. Miss Roberts very kindly offered to hold an after school cookery session for the club and she came up with three superb recipes for the children to cook the potatoes. We made roasted potato salad, cheese and potato bake and leek and potato soup. These were all enjoyed by the children at home. Miss Clarke & Mrs Jones

The seed potatoes were so small; I didn’t expect them to grow. After planting them we watered them daily and searched the surface for a shoot. Some children grew impatient and wanted to dig them up, to see if they were still growing, but three weeks to the day, we were rewarded with a green shoot! The children enjoyed the whole experience and winning the competition for the heaviest yield of potatoes in the UK, was a great surprise!’ Maggie Rose Class teacher

This year we grew our potatoes using seaweed mixed with the soil. Our crop was good although not very big. We won 3rd Prize at our local Hortcultural Show. The Garden Club at the school enjoyed a night cooking and eating our potatoes.

Oldfield Primary School in Chester have been busy growing potatoes. The children in Year One planted the potatoes in containers and cared for the plants. Once the plants were fully grown and the flowers had died the children shared a Key Stage One Potato assembly. The children were amazed as we turned out the potatoes during the assembly. We had such a good crop that many of the children were able to come to dig for potatoes during the assembly. Following the assembly we boiled the potatoes and served them with some butter....ummm. Thank you for providing us with such a real life and practical learning opportunity.
